Canyonlands National Park

Canyonlands NP is divided into 3 Districts.  The Island in the Sky, in the center, is the most developed and most visited of the Districts.  It has paved roads and facilities including modern pit toilets.  It is also the easiest to get to being relatively close to Moab.  The Island in the Sky is bordered on the West by the Green River and on the east by the Colorado River.

The Maze District is by far the most remote and the most undeveloped.  There are no facilities, no waterand the roads (actually trails) are very primitive.   Camping is allowed in designated campsites.  Permits are Required and sometimes difficult to get because of high demand from Hikers, Mountain Bikers and 4 Wheelers.  The nearest fuel to the entrance to the Park is about 60 miles so extra gas is required. The Maze is on the West side of the Green River.

The Needles District is on the Southeast side of Canyonlands.  It is on the east side of the Colorado River. The Needles is much more developed and less remote than the Maze.  The designated trails are moderately challenging in some areas.  Camping is allowed in designated Campsites, permits required.  The needles is very popular with hikers, mountain bikers and 4 Wheelers so it is often difficult to get a camping permit.
