We typically meet at the Jacumba CA gas stations at Exit 73 from I-8 where we fuel up and air down. When then travel a few hundred feet south on Carrizo Gorge RD and take a dirt trail to the east toward the Mica Gem underpass for I-8. From there we head north until we reach an intersection with 3 trails. We take the middle trail and as it turns east. At a point there is a sign indicating the trail enters Anza Borrego Desert State Park. Continue until you see a trail to the left heading down the mountain. At that point take a steep trail heading up a hill. Once on top of the hill there is a great view of the Desert floor and Interstate 8 as it descends the montain. The trail narrows and becomes a “Shelf Trail” as it switchbacks down the mountain. It finally comes to the site of ruins along Interstate 8 where we normally have lunch. After lunch we continue back up the mountain via the Old Stage Coach trail until we meet the original trail again.
This trail is relatively easy if going around the loop in a counter clockwise directions. It is rated as a 1+ going counter clockwise and a 2 to 2+ going around the loop clockwise. Anyone with a fear of heights may be intimidated by the narrow Shelf Road with high, steep drop-offs. Bighorn Sheep are often spotted near the Spring at the bottom of the loop.
